The historic building of the University of Barcelona is the work of Elies Rogent, began its construction in 1863, but it was not finished until 1882. This building had a major impact on the city, since it was one of the first buildings to be built outside the ancient walls.

Work on the new headquarters lasted for over twenty years, although in 1871 it was already well under way as to enable it deliver the first class.
