Granada Province > La Mamola Virtual Trip

La Mamola is located in the most Eastern zone of the coast of Granada. The distance that separates it of the capital of the province is of about 150 km, Almeria is at  80 km towards the East and Motril is at 30 Km towards the West. The access to La Mamola, administrative capital of the Municipality of the La Mamola-Polopos, is made through the N-340 highway.

The municipality of La Mamola - Polopos includes from the Mediterranean Sea to the Haza del Lino, that is at 1,252 meters of altitude, which gives an idea of the steep land in which it is based. The mountain range of the Contraviesa, that serves from base to Sierra Nevada, rises over the town in few meters, leaving a small land strip, in which the town has been developed.

Little it is known on the origins of the village. During the time of Muslim dominion of the Iberian Peninsula, La Mamola belonged to the Tahá of Sahil. Of this Arab stage vestiges of several rural rain tanks have left and chain dumps, symbols of a prosperous agriculture without a doubt.

After the conquest of Granada by the Catholics Kings, by virtue of the stipulated thing in the Capitulations, this territory was given to the last nazarí king Boabdil, and once he marched to North Africa, it ended up integrating itself in the crown of Castile.

King Fernando the Catholic sold the territory to one of the conquerors of the house of Portocarrero, pertaining to the lineage that defended the ´señorío´ of the zone.

At this Christian time, the continuous threat of pirates and Arabs caused that a military architecture of great interest was developed in the zone. This defensive purpose, possibly gave rise to La Mamola, nucleus located near the sea under the refuge of the Tower of Cautor (S. XVl), of doubtless historical value and that in addition is easily visitable.

Polopos and the Mamola appears referenced in documents of century XIX, that describe it as a prosperous place thanks to the production of  wines and brandies that were sold in Malaga. Also there were factories of brandy and several mills.

At the moment La Mamola is a calm and prosperous population that lives basically on agriculture. With the introduction of the conservatories in years 80 of century XX, a time of great prosperity began in the town, that has ended up attracting a strong migratory flow from countries of the east of Europe. The tranquillity and the climate of the zone have also attracted many people of the north of Europe (Great Britain, Holland, etc.) who have settled down in this earth their residence.
