Republic Square is located in the heart of the city of Florence. His current rectangular shape is due to the ´cleansing´ that took place during the period when Florence was the capital of Italy (1865-1871), in this period the walls surrounding the city were removed, today only remians some of the doors. The demolition of the walls led the creation of the streets that today make up the commercial center of the city.
The column indicates the place where was located the Roman Forum, and is known as ´column of abundance´. This area also homed the ghetto.
Around the square are some historic cafes like Caffé Gilli, the Paskowski Caffé or Caffé delle Giubbe Rosse, that were meeting places of artists in the past
